Some policemen have written a petition threatening to stop obeying the directives of the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mr Ibrahim Idris, if he fails to punish a rogue officer allegedly involved in transfer racket.

Sources at the Force Headquarters in Abuja identified the officer, who was reported by his colleagues, as Superintendent of Police (SP) Hakeem Adebayo of Oyo State Command.

Adebayo was accused of serial forgeries of police transfer signals.

The petitioners claimed that he usually posts himself to any formation of his choice.

Acting on the petition, the IGP allegedly ordered the detention of Adebayo at the Special Investigations and Intelligence Bureau (SIIB), Force Headquarters, in Abuja, where he is being tried for his alleged involvement in illegal transfer. He was moved to Abuja, under escort, from Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.

But the petitioners are not comfortable with the pace of the investigation and they are threatening to stop obeying directives if the authorities fail to act appropriately.

They expect the IGP to dismiss and prosecute the officer involved in the alleged act.

Newsmakers learnt that Adebayo who had spent 10 years in Oyo State Command once forged a signal that transferred him to Lagos after he was posted to Kaduna, and he was able to deceive the authorities in Lagos who received the signal.

He also allegedly deceived those at the Oyo State Command, when he issued a signal returning him to the state after he was posted to Yobe State.

He was eventually exposed when he allegedly began to mock some of his colleagues who had embarked on their transfer in line with the IGP’s directive.

The Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO), Mr Moshood Jimoh, who answered Newsmakers call at 3:25pm, refused to comment on the matter.

Police integrity has been a subject of debate lately, after Senator Isah Hamman Misau raised the alarm over corrupt practices in the Force.
