Photos showing a Nigerian trader retrieving sugarcane sticks from the gutter has emerged on social media.

Some online comments also suggested the trader might be using the gutter water to wash the sugarcane sticks prior to selling them.

Majority of the comments however centred on the need for the public to be extra careful when purchasing food items and also ensure that they clean such thoroughly before consumption.

Some also advised consumers to buy only unpeeled fruits to minimise the risk of contamination.
