To commemorate the 2025 World Day for Safety and Health at Work, the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF) has emphasized the need for the adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and workplace digitization by governments, organizations, and employees.

Speaking at the event held in Ibadan, the NSITF Regional Manager, Mrs. Toyin Emeordi, stated that AI and digital technologies have the potential to significantly reduce workplace accidents by identifying potential safety risks in advance.

“AI-powered systems can also enhance the monitoring of workers’ well-being and detect potential health risks. All these improvements will positively impact NSITF’s services to both employers and employees,” she emphasized.

Mrs. Emeordi also highlighted the integration of AI with NSITF’s ongoing digitization and modernization initiatives, recently introduced by the Fund’s Managing Director/CEO, Barrister Oluwaseun Faleye.

This year’s theme, “Revolutionizing Health and Safety: The Role of AI and Digitalization at Work,” underscores the importance of technology in creating safer and healthier work environments.

The keynote lecture titled “The Role of Artificial Intelligence and Digitization at Work” was delivered on behalf of Dr. Olusola Ayoola, Founder and CEO of Robotics and Artificial Intelligence Nigeria (RAIN), by his wife and partner, Mrs. Aminat Akinyemi-Ayoola. She is a renowned AI researcher and Academic Director of RAIN.

The session included an interactive Q&A, which participants described as insightful and impactful. One staff member, who claimed anonymous, noted the session deepened his understanding of technology’s role in workplace safety.

Mrs. Akinyemi-Ayoola issued a call to action:

To governments: Create forward-thinking policies and invest in infrastructure.

To organizations: Ethically integrate technology and prioritize employee upskilling.

To employees: Embrace lifelong learning and contribute to shaping the future of technology.

She concluded with a powerful message: “Safety is a right, not a privilege; health is a necessity, not negotiable.”

The World Day for Safety and Health at Work, observed annually on April 28, promotes global awareness and action to prevent occupational accidents and diseases while reaffirming safety as a fundamental human right.
