A murderer wanted for 26 years was accidentally detected by German police at Dusseldorf Airport.
The 44-year-old had been trying to fly to Barcelona when he was stopped in a random check, a police spokesperson said on Monday.
An arrest warrant issued by Irish authorities for drug-related offences prevented him from boarding the flight.
After becoming suspicious, police checked the man’s fingerprints, which shed light on his more serious prior offences. A court had ruled that the man, an Albanian, had shot someone in 1997 under a different name.
Albania’s government had issued an international arrest warrant at the time. Murder has no statute of limitations in Albania, meaning German authorities can now extradite him.
