Nigerian jazz-soul sensation Comandrthyann, also known as Comandr, has staged a bold comeback to the music scene with the release of her long-anticipated debut EP, Beautiful, after a decade-long hiatus.
The six-track project, released on May 30, 2025, is an emotional yet vibrant sonic cocktail of Jazz, R&B, and Pop, featuring the tracks: Dance with Me, Be Mine, Cook the Mystery, Celebration Time, Happy, and Play The Music.
Known for her signature blend of soulful rhythms and Afrocentric jazz, Comandrthyann’s return is being hailed as a renaissance for authentic African jazz lovers. The EP — her first major body of work in 10 years — is already generating buzz on streaming platforms and jazz circuits.
“I call myself an Authentic African Jazz Artist. That’s my slogan,” she affirms, confidently reclaiming her spot in the genre.
All tracks on the EP were produced by MajorKLASSIC, except Cook The Mystery, which was produced by EX-O and mastered by MajorKLASSIC.
Born Johnson Mary-Ann Akalo on August 10, 1989, in Lagos, with roots in Obudu (Cross River State) and Okrika (Rivers State), Comandrthyann started her professional career in 2010. Her journey in music has seen her collaborate with legendary producers like Dr Frabz, OJB Jezreel, J’mo, Tony Tonero, and most recently MajorKLASSIC.
A protégé of the late Nomoreloss, she was a regular performer at Lagos’s Rodizzo Lounge, where she sharpened her jazz craft and built a loyal fan base. Her stage presence has lit up high-profile events, including the Calabar Carnival, where she performed alongside Banky W, Bez, and Niniola, and the Ikeja Easter Mega Jam with Tu Baba and Reminisce.
Beyond the stage, Comandrthyann juggles her artistry with motherhood, raising two daughters, Anastasia and Ariel. Her resilience shines through, especially after recently recovering from a serious health challenge — a comeback story that makes Beautiful even more symbolic.
The release of Beautiful is just the beginning. She is now gearing up for her first jazz concert, scheduled for August 9, 2025, promising an unforgettable live experience.
