Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has paid glowing tribute to the late Afenifere leader, Pa Ayodeji Adebanjo, describing him as a tireless advocate for justice, democracy, and an egalitarian society.
Speaking at the funeral service held on Saturday at St. Philip’s Anglican Church, Isanya-Ogbo, in the Odogbolu Local Government Area of Ogun State, Governor Abiodun said Pa Adebanjo’s lifelong dedication to human dignity and national unity will remain etched in Nigeria’s political history.
“Baba’s passing marks the end of an era, but his legacy will continue to shape Nigeria’s democratic evolution and the ideals of true federalism,” the governor stated. “He was an unwavering opponent of military rule, a founding pillar of NADECO, and a relentless voice for the return to civilian governance after the annulment of June 12.”
Abiodun lauded Pa Adebanjo’s deep commitment to Yoruba unity and cultural preservation, noting that his influence extended far beyond ethnic lines.
“He was a symbol of Yoruba resistance to marginalization and cultural erosion. His advocacy mirrored the spirit of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., embodying the belief that ‘injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere,’” he added.
Governor Abiodun described the elder statesman as a moral compass in Nigeria’s turbulent political journey—one who denounced corruption and nepotism while championing equity and inclusion. He urged Nigerians to emulate Pa Adebanjo’s values of integrity, tolerance, and service to humanity.
“He loved and respected people across political divides and remained devoted to God until his final days. May we all learn from his example and strive to live in peace with one another,” he said.
Delivering the sermon, the Bishop of Remo Anglican Diocese and Archbishop of the Ecclesiastical Province of Lagos, Most Rev. Olusina Fape, emphasized the importance of living a purposeful life.
Speaking on the theme “The Glory of a Purposeful Life” and drawing from John 18:37–38, Archbishop Fape said every individual has a divine mission to fulfill.
“Death is inevitable, but what matters is how purposefully one has lived,” he said. “Pa Adebanjo fulfilled his purpose by contributing meaningfully to the development of Nigeria, his state, and his community. Leaders must remember they will one day give account before God.”
