President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has commissioned the first phase of the ambitious Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, declaring it a symbol of Nigeria’s infrastructural rebirth and a critical step toward national integration and economic recovery.

At the ceremony held in Lagos today, the President issued a strong warning to estate developers and contractors violating building laws, declaring that there would be “no compensation without compliance.”

“Let me warn all the developers that the Federal Government will enforce setbacks. Developers who fail to get approvals will not be compensated,” Tinubu said, citing the government’s renewed commitment to urban planning, environmental safety, and the rule of law.

The commissioned segment—Ahmadu Bello Way to Eleko Village Area—marks the beginning of a 700km superhighway that will connect nine coastal states: Lagos, Ogun, Ondo, Delta, Edo, Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, and Cross River.

Highlighting the strategic importance of local capacity, Tinubu praised Hitech Construction Company for delivering a world-class project using Continuously Reinforced Concrete Pavement, a more durable alternative to traditional road construction materials.

“We averted a disaster greater than a tsunami in Victoria Island and Ikoyi,” Tinubu said, commending the role of Engineer Ronald Chagoury and urging further support for what he called “the impossible made possible.”

The President also commissioned over 20 critical infrastructure projects across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones, including:

South-South: Rehabilitation of the Calabar-Ugep-Katsina-Ala Road, East-West Road sections, and the Alesi-Ugep section in Cross River and Rivers States.

South-East: Rehabilitated Enugu-Port Harcourt Road, a new bridge in Ebonyi, and reconstruction of the Enugu Bridge.

South-West: Expanded Lagos-Shagamu-Ibadan expressway, Ikorodu-Shagamu Road, and Deep-Sea Port Access Road.

North-Central: Shendam Bridge in Plateau and the Ilobu-Enrile Road.

North-East: Jimeta Bridge in Yola.

North-West: Reconstruction of multiple roads in Kano, Jigawa, and Kaduna States.

In addition, Tinubu flagged off new projects, including the Ibadan-Ife-Ilesha-Akure-Benin Road, Nembe-Brass Road, Enugu-Onitsha Carriageway, and the Kano-Maiduguri Dual Carriageway, among others.

Minister of Works, David Umahi, revealed that N18 billion was paid in compensation to those affected by the Lagos-Calabar Highway project, assuring that sustainability and citizens’ welfare remain top priorities.

The ceremony drew a high-profile crowd including Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Nobel Laureate Wole Soyinka, NSA Nuhu Ribadu, industrialists Aliko Dangote and Tony Elumelu, and governors from over 10 states.

Ending on a hopeful note, Tinubu appealed for public patience amid current economic reforms.

“Hope is here. Our economy is recovering,” he said, pointing to recent gains in forex stability and food price reduction.
